
At Richmond Centre we know that our customers and merchants have high expectations for us to reduce the environmental impact of our operations. Not only do we consider our green initiatives on Earth Day, we are committed to them year-round.
During our Recent Redevelopment
Richmond Centre either recycled, salvaged or disposed the following during our recent redevelopment:

Notable timber salvage included 2 x 12 roof timbers being re-used in the construction project where 2 x 12 framing was called up. Also, 760 lineal of Glulam and structural timber was salvaged and recycled to the Western Reclaimed Timber Corporation.
To date, Richmond Centre’s green initiatives include:
- Use of T8 lighting where applicable, to save energy
- Use of CFL lights where applicable
- Use of photocells to control lighting
- Motion detectors for mechanical room lights, saving energy
- Use of an energy management system to reduce hydro use (to date we have reduced our electrical consumption by 2,000,000 kilowatts)
- Roof top units have a free cooling system
- Use of power factor correction equipment
- Annual infrared scans to monitor electrical systems
- Use of variable speed drives
- Use of low flow toilets/urinals and fixtures, saving water
- Use of time clocks for irrigation system
- Meter heavy water users individually
- Recycle cardboard/paper from merchants, reducing landfill waste
- Recycle plastic hangers and shrink wrap from merchants
- Recycle cardboard and paper from offices
- Recycle cans/bottles throughout the mall
- Recycle grease from food retailers, reducing landfill waste
- Use eco-friendly cleaning products, reducing the amount of chemicals that go into the water system
- No chemical use in exterior or interior landscaping
- Use of bark mulch in landscaping to reduce water usage
- An energy and waste audit, to map our progress in energy and waste reduction
- Use of FSC certified paper materials wherever possible (including banners and store directories), otherwise the most environmentally-friendly alternatives.
- Shopping bags that are oxo-biodegradable poly containing EPI additives. They will biodegrade when exposed to photo (sunlight), thermal (heat) and/or mechanical stress (weight).
- Donation of 10,000 plants used in spring "Blossom" display to local garden clubs.
And we are working on accomplishing the following initiatives:

- Building automation upgrades
- Replacing rooftop units with energy efficient models with non-ozone depleting refrigerants
- Mapping our carbon footprint
